Ajamila - Greatness of Nama Sankirtanam

The Sixth  Skandha of Srimad Bhagavatam begins with the story of  Ajamila, who lived in Kanyakubja, lead a wayward life in spite of his good parentage and learning. He was a man of  good character till his early youth, performing daily vedic rituals, prayers, affectionate to his parents and children and very helpful for many others. He was a committed householder, having a loving wife and children.

When he had gone out of town with some of his friends, he met a beautiful woman, and   was very badly attracted to this woman of doubtful character. She appeared  to him extremely  beautiful and voluptuous.  In spite of his early efforts to move away from her, he fell into a trap of carnal pleasures. He left his parents, noble wife and family, and permanently joined his new found women of bad character, due to his ego and lust which blinded him.

Ajamila forgot his parents, loving family, people who respected him, and good friends only to be with this woman forgetting all his responsibility. He began his new life with her, spent all his time, wealth, and youth with her. He had children with her also. Now the once good  person had turned alcoholic, lazy and irresnow ponsible for what he did. He had forgotten all his daily chores of worship to Devatas, scholars and noble souls. Women, wine and wealth had spoiled him very badly. However, by choice as it were, named his youngest son among his ten children from his new women as Narayana.

Ajamila was now aged, crippled with sickness and bed ridden. He liked his youngest son and used to call him often for anything he needed. He was nearing his death each day due to old age and sickness. He was 88 now, unable to walk freely or help himself. Ajamila’s time to die was nearing. His health deteriorated each day. Messengers of the lord of death, Yama appeared to him in his semi-conscious state. They were red eyed, looked ferocious and the old man, as usual called his son’ Narayana!’, in agony and pain.

When this name was called out louder and louder, messengers of Gods rushed towards him. There was a heated discussion and quarrel among both the messengers of Yama and gods. Finally, Yama’s messengers had to return disappointed though since they were not supposed to touch and carry anyone who utters the sacred name of Narayana.

Messengers of Devas have a message: .

 One has to follow conduct as per Vedas, not against them, which is termd adharma. Veda is only the Knowledge of Supreme, Narayana.

Hence, the easiest and certain way of reaching God is repeating his sacred name as and when it is possible. It removes our sins effectively. This applies to all, whether great, mediocre or mean beings. This episode of Ajamila conveys a strong message of the greatness of Nama Sankirtanam, as a regular habit, which makes us morally and spiritually strong.

Sri Vyasatirtha- and Sri Vadiraja Swamy

Sri Vyasatirtha and Vadiraja are two stalwarts who enriched Madhva literature both in Samskrit and Kannada. They lived during the  same time. While one was Rajaguru of Vijayanagar kings, the other is a well known reformer,  and rejuvenator of Krishna Matha,  Udupi. Books on life of Vadirajaru say that he visited Vyasaraja a couple of times, for a discussion on Madhva classics. Surprisingly neither mention their names or books written by either. They were contemporaries, but neither verbally recognise each  other!  Both were Balasanyasins, living for long years. Very strange enough, Kanaka Dasaru was known to both. Even Vyasa Tirtha is believed to have spent some time in Udupi. Vadirajaru is one among Bala Sanyasins, heading Sri Vishnu tirtha Mutt, later called Sode Matha.
Date of Vyasa Tirtha-1460-1539,     Vadiraja Tirtha - 1480-1600.

Vishnu worship in different forms

 Temples dedicated to Vishnu, have normally   his Avatara forms with Narasimha, Rama, Krishna.. statues consecrated ; rarely we find Varaha/ Kurma  as in Srimushnam, Kurma elsewhere. we even have temple of Parashurama in Kolar, Karnataka, on Bengaluru- Chennai road. Atyarla in Andhra Pradesh, Gokarna, Karnataka. Maharshtra, Uttaranchal, UP also have shrines dedicated to Parashurama.

  Sri Ananteshvara temple, Udupi is another form of Parashurama, in Linga or shapeless form. A couple of Parashu Rama temples are in Northern India) . Some of them are statues with Axe holding, as in Tiruvallam, Kerala , Gokarna, Kunjaru and Kolar. Places where Parashurama has saved land by pushing back the Sea, are called Parashurama Kshetras, ranging from Mangaluru- Goa.

Going by history recorded, it was built around 800 CE, and earlier another Shiva temple worshipped as Chandra Moulishvara existed   in Udupi. We find several such temples of Shiva in Mangalore and Udupi districts in Karnataka. Some are old, some built during early and later Vijayanagar time. Tulu dynasties of Taulava, Alupa and other chieftains  ruled in the area  reporting to the King. Some of them served as warriors in the army even earlier.

Srimadananteshvara temple, near Sri Krishna shrine has a Linga form, worshipped as Parashurama, avatara of Vishnu. It is worshipped as per Vaishnava Agama.  A certain ruler Rama Bhoja is said to have given land grants, now controlled by Krishna Matha. it is very difficult to trace the origin of Linga worship to various dieties like Vishnu, Devi and forms thereon, like Duga Parameshvari as in Katilu and elsewhere where there is Vaishnvagama mode of Pujas.

Sri Vadirajatirtha,  noted Madhva saint of Udupi writes in his travelogue Tirtha Prabandha:

Sri Vishnu, as if reminding his Antaryami ( indweller )  in Shiva, is present here in form of Shiva linga.

This is the philosophical sense of the Form of God, worshipped there. However, we can find such linga forms elsewhere in Coastal Karnataka, worshipped as Vishnu. Paranti is one among such places, where 5 Lingas are worshipped as forms of Vishnu. It is not easy to understand the historical reason of such places of worship, that they still stand as places of  worship, justifies absence of any other form of Puja. Even in coastal Kerala we have such temples, but Parashurama statue with weapons exist in Kunjaru and elsewhere.

Parashurama Temple, Kunajurugiri, near Udupi, and Kolar ( Karnataka towards Mulbagal ) and also similar temples in Chiplun, Tryambakeshvar ( Mh), and UP, Jharkhand, HP elsewhere..    Temples in Dakshina Kannada, Karnataka are:  Ananteshvar, Udupi, Bantwal. sanyasi Katte  and Udyavara. North India  has Parashuram Kund, a  pilgrim center in Lohit District of Arunachal Pradesh,  dedicated to Parashurama.

Ayodhya when Sri Vadiraja Swamy visited...

Sri Vadiraja Tirtha is a great saint of Udupi, Karnataka who has written a travelogue of pilgrim centers of  his time across Bharat. He names his work Tirtha Prabandha, in poetical Samskrita. He has covered most of Yatra places. beginning Udupi, Himalayan region and the  entire country. The Swamiji lived during 1480-1600 a life of 120 years. He is a noted   scholar, poet, dialectician and author of several Madhva texts.

Teertha Prabandha is divided into 4 chapters,( in 235 slokas), Pashchima, Uttara, Purva, Dakshina Prabandhas. His visit to the City of Ayodhya is recorded in only 1 Verse of Uttara Prabandha;

- The City of Ayodhya, dear to Sri Rama,  stands here like a devout wife, keeping and  respecting the sandals of her husband, while he  has gone to forest.

While there is no further description, unlike other Kshetras he visited, we can only say that the city was not in good shape or glory during later 16th century. However, it is not clear who was ruling the region during the Saint's visit. The reader can only guess that Ayodhya was no more a glorious city of earlier times.

Sri Vadiraja Gurucharitamritam says about the incident:

- The great Yogi wanted to visit Ayodhya during his tour, He procured Idols of Hanuman and Garuda to Udupi on his return. We can see these 2 idols in the inner premise of Krishna temple, Udupi.

Nava Vrindavana Dispute

As a practicing Madhva with due respect to all our 24 or 25 Mathas, which were formed to propagate teachings of Acharya Madhva, I am watching  each year there will be some dispute or the other, earlier Mula Rama and now with 9 Vrindavanas at Anegondi. It was a very low key affair in olden days when river Tungabhadra sometimes was flooding with the place immersed under water for a couple of days, even after a dam was built near Kampli.

Our great teachers from Sri Padmanabha tirtha to Sri Rama Tirtha have been interred here as they might have preferred to spend their last days near monuments of earlier Gurus, or on their entourage covering Vijayanagar province, for which Sri Vyasarajaru was a principal adviser to 3 generations of rulers here. As far I know there was no dispute before 150 years or so, when hardly any pontiff visited this place, except on few occasions.

Now that a dispute has been raised by disciples of  Uttaradi, Raghavendra Mathas about Vrundavan of Sri Jayatirtharu, a great commentator on Sri Madhvacharya's works, whether it is at Anegondi or Malakhed near Kalaburagi.

Fortunately, above dispute seems to have been settled amicably in a meeting of pontiffs of contending Mathas recently. Still, Vyasaraja matha cannot claim ownership of their Guru Vrindavanas, which the Hon'ble Courts have to reconsider.

Brindavanas  in Anegondi

 1. Shri Padmanabha Thirtharu --- 1317-1324

 2. Shri Kavindra Thirtharu ---1392-1398

3. Shri Vageesha Thirtharu ---1398-1406

.4 Sri Vyasaraja Thirtharu – 1447-1539 (Shri Vyasaraj

a Mutt)

5. Raghuvarya Thirtharu  (1502-1537 (?)

 6. Sri Srinivasa Tiitharu - 1539-1564 (Shri Vyasaraja Mutt)

 7. Sri Rama Thirtharu - 1564-1584 ((Shri Vyasaraja Mutt)

8. Sri Sudheendra Thirtharu - 1614-1622 ( Sri Raghavendra’s Guru)

9. Sri Govinda Odeyaru ---(1534)( Sri Vyasaraja’s Disciple)

Generally, unless there is a land grant by a ruler, we fail to have any historical proofs for such tombs of saints. Traditional texts are always unclear or confused about such events, since the saints themselves were great men who discouraged publicity or fanfare by their successors or followers to celebrate their Aradhanas.

The great Commentator on Madhva texts popularly called Teekacharya, the master commentator was a recluse living in a cave composing tikas to Sri Madhvacharya, answering later objections by other schools of Vedanta. He was away from public life, blessing those who occasionally visited him for knowledge or blessings.

After the advent of IT industry, when neo- Madhvas' economical status improved, several youngsters turned towards learning Madhva texts, which even some of their forefathers  were unable to learn. They started visiting unvisited places of Madhva interest from Udupi to Rameshvaram, or even North of India to trace the final resting places of earlier Gurus. by way of this, disputes began about these monuments, of whom many are lost for ever, like the celebrated Sri Vidyadheesha Tirtharu.

While Samadhi places of Sripadaraja, Vyasaraja, Vadiraja, Vijayeendra Swamijis are popular places of visit, some even go to farway Malkheda, on the banks of a cranky annual river Kagini/Kagina to have darshan of Sri Jayatirtha Guru. Several overzealous Shishyas, pestered the Swamijs to prove their either original/ supreme place among Madhva institutions, which our great saints never had!

Even Courts of law were approached, and judgements were passed not to hurt either of the parties. The Swamiji of Sripadaraja Matha, after trying to compromise other Mathas, finally consecrated Sri Padmanabha Tirtha's Brindavan, near Sripadaraja's Vrundavan to avoid the never-ending dispute.

Finally, all swamijis are learned and enlightened to take a stand which is right, but disciples seem not to allow them to settle disputes without annual or occasional fight with words as swords!!! each one of them argue on their social media post about arguments of other Matha, and try to prove their point in a dialectic manner.
